Paula has spent the last 25 years focused on improving service delivery systems for elders in need of care and services through executive management positions and consulting projects. She has in-depth experience and a proven track record in senior housing and assisted living operations, staff training, regulatory compliance, and new program development.
Prior to founding her consulting business, she spent seven years as the Executive Operations Officer for Emeryoak,LLC and Chief Operating Officer of AgeSong Senior Communities, operators of assisted living and dementia care communities, where she oversaw operations, marketing and new building development. Previously, she served 5 years as Vice President of Operations and Marketing for Elder Care Alliance, a nonprofit faith based organization, where she participated in all phases of feasibility, development, and operations for its assisted-living, dementia care, and multilevel long-term care communities in California. She also worked for ARV Assisted Living for 11 years in various capacities, including as Vice President of Operations, Regional Marketing and National Acquisitions and Vice President of Strategic Planning. Early in her career she served as Director for the City of Anaheim’s Adult Day Care Program.
Paula holds a masters of social work from San Jose State University. She is actively involved in state and national industry associations including past commissioner of the California Health Policy and Data Advisory Commission, past board member of the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), past Board Member of the Emeryville Municipal Transportation Authority, and is currently Past President, Board Member and Education Co-Chair for the California Assisted Living Association (CALA), Chair of the Presence Care Project and Project Coordinator for the Equine Guided Support Project.

Marguerite is the co-founder of Senior Living Consult. Marguerite’s expertise is in dementia care, particularly in the areas of caregiver training and resident and family engagement. She is the CEO and co-founder of the Presence Care Project, a new, innovative training for dementia care partners, that will be launched at UCSF OSHER Center for Integrative Medicine in the Fall of 2012. She also serves as an advisor for Living Well Assisting Living at Home. Marguerite is a frequent guest speaker at local and national organizations and events.
Marguerite is a licensed clinical social worker and registered art therapist with a mindfulness-based psychotherapy private practice in Palo Alto, CA. She facilitates the Stanford Parkinson’s Caregiver Support Groups. She is a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) instructor and ex- Zen Hospice volunteer. Marguerite is also a social media expert with an active online presence including several popular blogs, a large Twitter following, and co-founding of the IMC social networking community . She frequently writes for the Huffington Post on aging, end-of-life, and dementia care.
Marguerite has an MSW from Loyola University of Chicago, an MA in Art Therapy from Notre Dame de Namur University, and an MBA from University of Chicago. Her business background includes many years as a marketing and advertising executive for Fortune 500 companies. She was born and raised in France, and works with both French and English speaking clients.

Leslie Ross, PhD, is a clinical neuropsychologist with over 20 years of clinical experience in the field of aging and working with individuals who are living with neurodegenerative disorders. She has conducted research and program evaluation for the past 15 years as part of her work at the University of California, San Francisco, the majority aging-specific.
Dr. Ross’s research interests cover long-term care, aging and health, quality of life for individuals living with cognitive impairments associated with neurodegenerative diseases, caregiver-related issues, the way in which brain disorders affect mental health and behavioral functioning, and program evaluation. Areas of specialization include neuropsychological assessment, relationships between brain and behavioral functioning, program evaluation, research design, methodology, analysis, and synthesis.
Dr. Ross received her PhD from the University of Memphis, and has been living in the Bay Area since 1991 where she completed her psychology internship at the VAMC in Palo Alto and post-doctoral clinical neuropsychology training at Stanford Medical Center.
Nancy Schier Anzelmo
Nancy is a widely known, highly regarded gerontologist and Alzheimer’s/dementia care specialist, consultant, speaker and trainer. As principal and founder of Alzheimer’s Care Associates LLC, she strives to enable her clients to achieve excellence in dementia care. Whether the environment is assisted living, adult day programs, skilled nursing or home care. Nancy is dedicated to promoting “person-centered” care that offers those with dementia opportunities to grow socially and spiritually and to enjoy enriched and satisfying lives.
Nancy’s career spans nearly 20 years and includes hands-on understanding of senior care marketing, operations, budgeting, program development, planning and evaluation gained as staff in a variety of long-term care setting. She is a faculty member in the Gerontology Department of California State University Sacramento.
Nancy holds a Masters Degree in Gerontology and has achieved national recognition and awards as a speaker, teacher and innovator in the field of Alzheimer’s dementia care programming. Currently she is a board member of the California Assisted Living Association and a member of the American Society on Aging, the Assisted Living Federation of America and the Gerontological Society of America.

Elke is passionately involved in aging, health and longevity issues and has partnered with Bay Area organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life of older adults over the past 12 years. Her primary focus has been operations, marketing and business development within the assisted living and home care industries. She has extensive experience in the development of new communities including the operational and marketing efforts required to achieve success while insisting on quality of care and excellence in programming.
Prior to joining Senior Living Consult, Elke co-founded AgeSong, Inc., an innovative development and management company of elder housing communities where she worked for 11 years. Her work was instrumental in AgeSong receiving the 2006 American Society on Aging – National Award for Excellence in the Field of Aging. Most recently, Elke co-founded The ElderHub, a virtual community providing education and elder care resources for bay area residents. In addition, Elke provides business development services to Living Well Assisted Living at Home, combining a team of experts, the use of smart technology with exceptional customer service to deliver personalized, comprehensive care to older adults at home. Her business development efforts include speaking engagements at major hospitals and leading Parkinson’s and Dementia Support Groups.
Elke is a graduate of Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California, where she studied Economics and Finance. She is licensed by the California Department of Social Services as a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly Administrator and past board member of the San Francisco Residential Care Association. Prior to serving older adults, Elke worked at SAP, a High Tech company within the areas of product management, marketing and business development.

Patty has spent the last 12 years advocating for seniors throughout the Bay Area. Much of her career was built on developing new properties, establishing operational protocols, building team and growing census for Bay Area senior assisted living communities. She is a recognized advocate for senior programs and services.
Most recently, Patty was the Regional Community Education Director, East Bay for AgeSong Communities. She was charged with developing a culture of outreach and education and to establish strong relationships with other healthcare organizations. Previously Patty was a Geriatric Care Manager with Eldercare Specialists where she helped to coordinate the care and support for older adults. She also worked at ElderCare Alliance for over five years as an Assistant Executive Director and Executive Director. As Executive Director for ECA she opened AlmaVia of San Rafael, an assisted living and dementia care community.
Patty got her start in this field at Coventry Park, an AF Evans community and from there she opened BridgePoint Senior Living a TransAmerica/Kisco Senior Property. Prior to her career with seniors, Patty was in the technology market working with start up firms in health care and contact management systems. Patty received her MA in Gerontology at San Francisco State University where she was awarded the University’s Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Achievement in 2004. When she isn’t advocating and assisting families on senior issues she can be found organizing school events and parties for her children.

Bernard Wheeler-Medley is experienced in operations, risk management and regulatory compliance. Bernard’s experience in long-term care and retirement housing began when he joined ARV Assisted Living/Atria Senior Living Group in 1996. Bernard served as Senior Vice President, Chief Quality Officer, and Associate General Counsel. As Chief Quality Officer, Bernard reported directly to the Board of Directors. Bernard created, implemented and directed the Company’s Quality Improvement Program and headed its Quality Assurance Department. Bernard also managed ARV/Atria’s regulatory compliance department and headed the design and implementation of procedures to ensure compliance with licensing and other relevant regulations in a multi-state environment.
While at ARV/Atria, Bernard became immersed in the day-to-day operations at the facility level. He participated and provided support for all areas of operations including formulating, revising, and implementing policies and procedures; participation in focused reviews of “challenged” facilities; audit and review of operations functions; and provided training at the facility, regional and corporate levels to members of the operations, sales and marketing, care providers and food services departments.
In late 2005, Bernard Wheeler-Medley co-founded Monarch Senior Living and subsequently served as Chief Operating Officer of a west coast assisted living/independent retirement housing company with eleven facilities in two states.
Bernard was previously of counsel to the Hanson Bridgett law firm in San Francisco, where he practiced in the health care/retirement housing department. Bernard also served as the assisted living risk management/operations analysis consultant to Nationwide Health Properties, where he developed the audit instrument used by the REIT to assess operations at its properties.
Bernard received a B.A. cum laude from University of San Diego. He also holds a Certificate (Premiere) from the Université de Grenoble (France) and a Juris Doctorate degree from Emory University (Atlanta). Bernard serves as a Director of California Assisted Living Association (CALA).
